I think the psychological angle is interesting but none of Freud's work covers this area that I am aware of anyway. A search of the Freud archives shows nothing, given that the idea of repression being responsible, I think Freud would have been interested. He died in 1939 but was writting til the end!

Carl Jung may however have something to sat on the subject - he put the 1950s UFO wave down to mass hysteria. I'll have a look. By the way I work with people with mental illnesses, and have rarely heard someone claim to be 'haunted'. When they have, it is usually small lost items which turn up when the Support Worker gives them a hand with thier cleaning!!!
